Brain Tumor Surgery

Brain surgery

Brain surgery is a medical procedure performed to treat problems in the brain caused by conditions such as tumors, blood clots, aneurysms, epilepsy, brain injuries, or abnormal brain structures. It involves accessing the brain through the skull (craniotomy) or using minimally invasive techniques to diagnose, remove, or repair damaged tissue, relieve pressure, or improve brain function.

Brain Tumor Surgery

Brain tumor surgery is a medical procedure performed to remove or reduce abnormal growths (tumors) in the brain. It is often the first step in treating brain tumors, whether they are cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign).

The goal of the surgery is to:

  • Remove as much of the tumor as safely possible

  • Relieve pressure on the brain

  • Preserve neurological function

  • Provide a tissue sample for accurate diagnosis (biopsy)

Depending on the tumor’s location, size, and type, neurosurgeons may use traditional open surgery (craniotomy) or minimally invasive techniques. In some cases, surgery is followed by radiation or chemotherapy.

Types of Brain Tumor Surgery

1. Endoscopic Tumor Removal: A minimally invasive method using a thin camera (endoscope) inserted through the nose or a small skull opening to remove tumors in deep or sensitive areas.

2. Stereotactic Biopsy : Uses 3D imaging to guide a needle into the brain and extract a small piece of the tumor for diagnosis, especially when full removal isn’t initially possible.

3. Awake Brain Surgery : Performed while the patient is awake but pain-free to monitor and preserve critical functions like speech or movement during tumor removal.

4. Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) : A minimally invasive technique using laser energy to heat and destroy tumor cells, guided by real-time MRI.

5.Transsphenoidal Surgery :Used for tumors near the pituitary gland, accessed through the nose and sinus without opening the skull.
